Mud wraps and mud baths are big business with spas these days as people get back to basics and realize that mud has so many built in minerals that it makes a great treatment to rid the body of toxins, relieve those tired muscles and relax the body.
A mud wrap is comprised usually of locally harvested mud and sometimes clay, sometimes a combination of the two, and it is then applied to the body. The mud is covered either in bandages, a PVC suit or a sauna suit to both contain the mud and to keep the body warm.
All the while, you are relaxing and laying down, taking it all in. The health benefits arise when the body sweats due to the weight of the mud and the warmness of the whole process. As you sweat, toxins are released from the body and other benefits from a mud wrap include a slimmer more toned body, firmer skin, relief from tired joints and decreased inflammation. Experts do caution that whatever weight loss you have from a treatment is just from loss of water however, and will be restored once you eat and drink again, and won't be permanent.
Going one step further is the mud bath, where you actually get into a pool of mud. These treatments have existed for thousands of years and usually happen in areas with natural hot springs and volcanic ash present. Around the world, places to take mud baths include certain lakes, saltwater seas like the Dead Sea, hot springs and places where mud volcanoes are present.
In the United States, most mud baths take place in resorts in California or Miami, and their 'mud' is actually a mixture of mud, imported Canadian peat and naturally heated mineral water. The benefits of taking a mud bath include relief of arthritis, to detoxify the body, to relax and revitalize and to have less inflammation than before.
In a spa, both a mud wrap and a mud bath will also come with a hot shower and a massage as part of the package for a total relaxation treatment. When you think of a spa you don't necessarily jump to mud, as spas are seen as clean and inspiring places, but mineral rich mud is good for your skin and good for your body, so why not indulge in some mud the next time you are at your favourite spa?
