How I Had a 5D4N Budget Vacation in Singapore for P7200 (RM 620)

With three days off from work, I finally have the chance to travel to neighboring countries. However, since I have limited resources, I've selected the two countries accessible by bus transport from Malaysia - Thailand and Singapore.

With time consideration, I heard from a local colleague that a bus ride to Thailand will take me 8 hours to Hatyai (but not yet Bangkok - only on the border of Malaysia-Thailand) and only 4-5 hours to Singapore.

While Thailand has a considerably lower cost of living than Singapore, I did some research and found out that there are endless ways to travel luxurious cities like Singapore within budget. Since it has excellent transportation routes and plenty of fascinating tourist spots, I chose to go Singapore, even if I have to eat Chicken Rice for one whole week.

TRANSPORTATION:

Departure: Kuala Lumpur, TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) -> Singapore, Little India (Fare: RM45 = P517.50)

Arrival: Singapore, Katong V Mall -> Kuala Lumpur, Chinatown KL 5 Elements Hotel (Fare: RM72 = P828)

Total Transportation Fare: RM 117 (P1345.50)

From all the three available transportation to Singapore - airplane, bus and train - bus is the most cheap and economical to choose since you can take the midnight tickets and sleep during the travel.

The bus trip is approximately 5.5 hrs from Malaysia to Singapore. Note that you may have to be awake during the last hour because intercity travels will require you to cross two immigration buildings - one exiting Malaysia and another one entering Singapore.

QUICK TIPS:

• If you can book online, do it so you can be reserved on the shuttle coach ahead of time. I booked mine at easybook.com. They also have lots of promotions including discounts and travel vouchers every month.
• As advised, choose the midnight schedule (12 AM) so you can arrive early in Singapore and utilize the saved time in roaming nearby tourist spots before checking in to your hostel.

I primarily chose Prince of Wales because this is one of the cheapest hostels with no bedbugs from the Agoda reviews which was a positive sign that it's well maintained. True enough, I was given a bedsheet, pillow and blanket after check-in. There were also five discount coupons with one free complementary Heineken/Jam Jar from the hostel. The management said they will discontinue the free Heineken/Jam Jar moving forward and that I was the last one who got the red coupon. Lucky me!

The mixed dormitory I stayed has four bunk beds, where most of the time occupants were Western foreigners. Aircon runs 9 PM - 9 AM only. Showers on the ground floor has heater and wi-fi speed is excellent. On one Saturday night, I came home to watch music bands performing laid back music.

Overall, this is a recommended hostel if you want a cheap backpacker accommodation with good quality service and proper maintenance.

DAY 1: LITTLE INDIA + BUGIS: RM 102 / SGD 34 / PHP 1173

Considering the hefty transportation cost for 5 days in Singapore, I planned to avail the Singapore Tourist Pass (STP) for SGD 20 (3-day Pass) which enables me to have unlimited travel on MRTs, LRTs and public buses. Then I'll use the STP for Day 2-4 so for Day 1, I only visited the tourist spots near my hostel - Prince of Wales.

Therefore, it is important to pick a strategic place where you will book your hostel. For me, I recommend Little India because:

• Its MRT is an interchange between North East Line (train going to Sentosa, Clarke Quay or Chinatown) and Downtown Line (train going to Botanic Gardens or Bugis)
• It has plenty of nearby temples and mosques (see below) with the cultural 'feel' that immerses your inner Indian.
• It has access to cheap hawker stalls for as low as SGD 5 per meal - like Tekka Centre - which is home to an exquisite variety of Singapore cuisine.
• You can also shop for souvenirs on Mustafa Shopping Centre for cheap perfumes or jewelries.

Bugis is also walking distance from Little India so you can buy your STP there, explore the shops on Bugis Street and pray on the nearby temple for blessings.

DAY 2: SENTOSA + MERLION + GARDENS BY THE BAY: RM 126 / SGD 42 / PHP 1449

By Day 2, I had unlimited transportation thanks to the STP card so I can roam everywhere in Singapore. Unfortunately, it does not cover the cost for Sentosa Express which I paid for SGD 4 (P140). I did not go anymore to the Universal Studios Singapore since I've gone there already but for those who are wondering, the entrance fee is SGD 74 (P2590).

In the afternoon, I went to Gardens by the Bay by strolling on the Raffles Place area, onto the Helix Bridge, and through the walkway on Marina Bay Sands. It was one of the most beautiful tourist spot I have ever seen in Singapore and the one I'll recommend especially when you avail the entrance fee to the Cooled Conservatories - Cloud Forest and Flower Dome - for SGD 28 (P966). I also got lucky because there was an event called Garden Rhapsody - Retro Fever on the Supertree Grove where there were bright lights dancing to the 80's tune and it was truly magnificent.

Marina Bay near the Merlion statue was very beautiful during the night. As I was walking on the Jubilee Walk Trail, I can see the splendid Marina Bay Sands shining through the calm waters. With the area still full of tourists, I suddenly remembered the song "The Night is Still Young."

DAY 3-4: BOTANIC GARDENS + ORCHARD + CLARKE QUAY + CHINATOWN: RM 60 / SGD 20 / PHP 690

From Little India, I went to the Singapore Botanic Gardens for my morning jogging. The habitat was very huge with lots of interactive trails such as Healing and Evolution Gardens. Since it belonged to one of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the place was also properly maintained with some area (near the Ginger Garden) still renovated. It was also near to some of the buildings of the National University of Singapore (NUS).

When I took the Orchard exit from the Botanic Gardens, I rode the bus using my STP to the sightly Orchard Road. Foreigners were bustling with branded paper bags from shopping malls such as Ion, Wisma Atria, Tangs, Takashimaya and Lucky Plaza. As a major tourist attraction full of retail and entertainment hubs, it was one of those places the millennial will usually coin as 'Instagrammable.'

To compensate from the tiring walk escapades, I decided to relax near the historical riverside they call as Clarke Quay. With various restaurants and nightclubs such as Hooters and Zouk (still closed for renovation), it may well be considered the party capital of Singapore.

Tourists can further enjoy their stay in the dazzling quay with G-Max Reverse Bungee (SGD 45 = P1575), Singapore River Cruise (SGD 22 = P770) or probably just chill on the Read Bridge with an ice cold beer while listening to some street performers.

The next day, I went to the colorful Chinese enclave in Singapore, the ethnic Chinatown. Starting from Pagoda street, I saw different kind of shops ranging from hot tiger balms to big ruby dragon statues. There were also Chinese and Indian temples near the area along with the Chinese Heritage Centre (with an admission fee of SGD 15 = P525).

I also went to two famous hawker centres along the vicinity, the Chinatown Food Street and the Maxwell Food Centre, especially the Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice which gained popularity from featuring of Anthony Bourdain on one of his No Reservations program.

Across the Maxwell Food Centre, there were museums such as 'Red Dot Design Museum and the Singapore City Gallery (formerly URA Gallery). Entrance is free of charge and the whole gallery aims to show the physical transformation in the last 40 years which are both educational and interesting. It also exhibited the city diorama of Singapore with accurate representations from buildings all over the country.

At night of Day 4, I met some of my friends in Singapore to have dinner on one of the restaurants situated along Robertson's Quay. We walked from Clarke Quay and onto the pedestrian footpath located near the contour of the riverside. Suffice to say, the food was extremely delicious.

Early morning, I checked out from my hostel, ate lunch at Geylang Road and surrendered my STP to get the SGD 10 deposit. Then I went to Katong V Mall which is bus pickup point going back to Malaysia. The shortest route was through Paya Lebar station and to the free shuttle pickup from Paya Lebar Square to Katong V.

Since I still have 2 hours to departure, I walked along the streets until I hit the serene waters of Singapore, the beach side of East Coast Park. It was styled as an urban getaway where families and friends can play volleyball, ride bicycles, celebrate fun events, fry barbeques and waddle in the waters. Overall, it's a perfect place to relax and relieve stress.

The Millennial Backpacker - Traveling Light

You're on a budget, or flying a discount airline with carry-ons fees, or taking public transportation. Of course the best thing is to take a backpack. A backpack; isn't that limiting? Even if you're staying at a hotel or with relatives, the idea makes sense and here's why:

1) Instead of lugging suitcases and roll-ons from the airport, you can save money taking local transportation, and henceforth from place to place.

2) As a stranger, you're less conspicuous without a suitcase. Hands free and sights ahead, you're less prone to pickpockets or pandering.

3) Keeping track of less in a strange place is freeing; you're not rustling through things at a hostel, or bothering others when arriving at midnight.

4) Too many clothes accumulate as dirty laundry, cluttering your suitcase, and your life further into your trip.

5) With too many things you spend more time on appearances, instead of the experiences and learning you hope to find.

Yes, backpacking simplifies, creating a more relaxing trip. But the secret to success lies in the planning. Evaluating your real needs, everything you pack becomes multi-purposed or interconnected.

Take your clothes. How many do you need? As a tourist, you don't see the same people daily, and your travel mates aren't there to judge. So bringing the minimum will suffice, (especially when hostels have laundries-close relatives too).

I recently returned from a 7 night trip to Costa Rica. We flew Spirit so the free backpack was limited to what could fit under the seat. Still, I had enough room with my school size pack. And with my leave behind method (more later), I had space to take home 2 bags of coffee too.

Here's what I took: 1 pair of jeans 2 pairs of shorts `1 pair of swim trunks

5 t-shirts 1 long sleeve shirt 1 thin rain jacket

6 pairs underwear 4 pairs of socks 1 thin (souvenir towel)*

1 pair flip flops plastic sneaker covers, toiletries, a water bottle, and a small fabric grocery bag.

I stuffed things into the pack, no PJ's, extra shoes or anything else. Of course I also had the clothes that I was wearing- I wore the bulkiest. I rolled things tight, securing with rubber bands or plastic in bags. By the time I finished, I had a fluffy pillow, but one that pushed adequately under my seat.

We arrived in San Jose late and took a cab to our hostel. In the morning I transferred my shirts and flip flops to the fabric bag. Four of us traveling by rental car, there was plenty of room. As we continued on our journey through the days, my pack became lighter and lighter. I was leaving things behind, rather than storing them as dirty laundry. Yes, the leave behind method is what I learned from a friend.

All of us have clothes wearing thin, or not the most attractive, socks with holes, or fraying underwear. Why not save them for your next trip? As the days went by I parted with them one by one, shorts, shirts, underwear, extra toiletries and finally the towel.

I flew back with my rain jacket, swim trunks, water bottle, some toiletries- and my coffee. At the airport I looked the student simply on a day trip.

So think about it, next time you have that urge to fly across country. Save yourself some hassle and money. Take a backpack; it's so much easier!

Is it just me or does your next holiday seem a loooonnnngggg way in the distance! Now I have heard of a species of humans who ACCRUE annual leave and are even FORCED to take holidays because they have TOO MANY?!?!?! But this is a very strange and foreign concept to me. I've always been either in the negative when it comes to annual leave or I can be found on extend unpaid leave. My motto has always been: life is too short to accrue leave!

But sometimes this mandate can place us avid adventurers in a bit of a conundrum. Yes there are years of our lives when we spend all our money gallivanting the globe but there are also, how do I put it... dry spells? You know the years when you undertake a renovation or perhaps you add to your brood or take some time off work and just don't have the kind of cash flow required to jump on a plane to Europe.

I still think, life is too short to accrue annual leave and so we need to think and plan creatively! One of the biggest challenges of being grounded in Australia due to lack of funds for international travel is of course the fact that the cost of living here is really high. Use Airbnb. This accommodation service has really changed the way I travel. I have used it prolifically throughout Europe and at home in Australia and it has proved to not only be reliable and reasonable, but it's a great way to obtain local knowledge of the places you are visiting.

Couch surf! Couch surfing is a great way to travel for free (you are literally crashing on someone's "couch" or spare bed). It's also a great travelling network - you can accrue friends all around the world.

Learn to love roughing it! Camping is such a great way to travel - especially as a family. If you're not a natural camper, learn to love it! Borrow gear from friends or family so you can have a bit of a trial run before investing in the complete setup. Kids love nothing better than the adventure of camping, so head to the bush or the beach and enjoy connecting with nature and getting back to basics. If you can foster a love of camping in your family when your kids are young, you will set yourself up for easy, fun, cheap, holidays for the rest of your lives! And if you're not used to roughing it, just choose your destination wisely. Make sure the campground has good facilities like hot water, toilets etc. And what could go wrong?!

Take control of your calendar! We all know how busy life can get. Before you know it the months are taken over with birthday parties, christenings, family gatherings and work events. It might all be fun, but you know what it equates to... months of endless busy weekends where you just can't get away. For me it's all about balance and prioritising holiday time. Whether you want to get away with the girls, your partner or your family, take control of your calendar and book out some weekends in advance so it actually happens.

Even if you don't have any massive international trips on the horizon, there is still something really exciting and rewarding about looking at your calendar and knowing you have a romantic weekend away coming up next month and a camping trip with family the month after that. It's great to allow for some spontaneity - if the weather is going to be good, why not hit the open road and chase the sun? But remember if you want to make holidaying part of your lifestyle you need to plan ahead and prioritise!

Nowadays with the internet, smart phones and Google Play, your world of traveling is a lot easier. But you have to keep up to date with the apps, as new ones are coming out all the time. Like maps.me which is run of GPS not data, so you can still find your way around, as soon as you land in Vietnam or any other country. Vietnam is a tourist Mecca, with tourists crawling all over the cities and countryside. The whole of the Hanoi old quarter is full of hostels and hotels, that cater to all levels of expense. From the cheapest hostel at $2.50 soon to be $3.50, to upwards of whatever you can afford. And the whole country is geared for the tourists, with organized tours to where ever you want to go.

And dispersed amongst the tourists are the semi permanent foreign workers, mainly teachers, etching out a living in this beautiful country, with a fair bit of pollution in the main cities, but not as bad as China. It seems the whole teaching system here is, basically going from one school to another. Most teachers ride motorbikes while others take the bus. And they come and go like flies. In the main cities the competition for jobs is fairly intense, but out of the cities they are always on the lookout for teachers.

And some teachers come here with hopes of getting a job, and end up in Cambodia, where it is easier to get a job. Some people come here and crash out on a beach, and just give up looking for jobs. Life in good here. It comes under "How To Live Cheap In An UnCheap World." And out of the tourist places and big cities, it is still cheap with beautiful beaches. And the joy of modernization is, you can crash out on an idyllic beach, and teach kids in China over the internet. You are not confined to the four walls of a classroom. And if you love beaches, sun, sand and a few beers after work, then this is the country to crash out in.

I have to say it but Vietnam is the place, as you can still get a three month visa. China was the place but now Vietnam is the place. Hong Kong used to be place before the Handover, but it has stayed the same, we could call Hong Kong the baseline. Before, like about 15 to 20 years ago, when you went from Hong Kong into China your went back in time, like about back to the 30s. Now when you go across the border at Lowu you are going into 2020, that's how advanced China has become in the last 20 years. But some things never change and Hong Kong is one of them.

In China, they usually only give you 30 days in the country, and you still have to get a very expensive visa. A far cry from the three month visas we used to get a couple of years back, that cost next to nothing. As economies around the world are having problems, the visa restrictions are loosening up, but not so in Asia where some economies are booming. In the big cities in China there is a sea of people just spending money and that is what keeps the economy going. When economies start slipping back into a recession or an economic downturn, they tend to live off tourists, and to get tourists they make it easier to get into the country.
