The majority of people have probably never even heard the word 'enzymes' and so they are ignorant of what they are and their purpose in the body. There are three types required for life. They are metabolic, digestive, and food enzymes. Their function will be dealt with in this article. The point to remember is that without them there can be no life and while we are ignorant of their function the spike in preventable diseases increases.
METABOLIC ENZYMES
These are produced in the pancreas and are essential for keeping our blood, tissues, and organs healthy. Their purpose is to remove toxins from the body along with old dead material from the cells. That means they play an important role in aging but as bodies mature they produce less of this substance, allowing for development of diseases, loss of bone density, and wrinkles.
The pancreas also produces the hormones insulin and glucagon. They work together to regulate blood sugar which, when normal, allows oxygen and nutrient to travel efficiently throughout the body. This is also where digestive enzymes are manufactured.
Best Foods for this enzyme are:
a) Bananas, kiwi, grapes, papaya, and so on
b) Raw honey
c) Extra virgin olive oil
d) Avocado
e) Dates
f) Raw oils
g) Sprouts
DIGESTIVE ENZYMES
These are essential to break down foods so nutrients can be absorbed into the blood stream for healthy body functions. Most people would have heard of this but not the reasons why they are essential for health. Food is broken down into nutrients that include amino acids, fatty acids, cholesterol, and simple sugars, but that is only the start of the process. Vitamins, minerals, and compounds from plants and animal food have to be extracted.
This is where the digestive enzymes play their part. Aside from those contained in saliva and the stomach the main source is the pancreas. There are many things that hinder production of this vital part of the system and when they are mal-functioning here are some of the symptoms to watch for:
a) Gas and bloating after eating
b) Feeling like there is a rock in the gut
c) A full sensation after only a few bites
d) Undigested food in stools
e) Floating stools
f) Undigested fat in the toilet.
FOOD ENZYMES
Plant enzymes actually start digesting foods before the body's system begins working. They enhance the digestion process and deliver nutrients to the blood even if the digestive system is non functional. What is not known is that they are killed at temperatures above 115 degrees Fahrenheit. As people usually cook their food the essential elements may be missing from them.
The thing to note is that food enzymes occur in RAW food. Studies undertake by Edward Howell (lauded as the enzyme pioneer) in the 1930's. He was particularly focused on the ability of raw food to slow chronic degenerative diseases. What we do when we cook our food is to create an environment for bad-health. Many have turned to changing their habits in order to 'heal' things like cancer and other diseases.
CONCLUSION
There are lessons to be learned from understanding the basic functions of enzymes. Training people to eat raw rather than cooked food may result in less need for medicines, surgeries, and even doctors.
There is plenty of research available for those interested enough to follow it through. This article is meant only as an introduction to better health and not as material from an expert in this subject.
